The grid reads backwards from your wardrobe.
Every cell states one objective fact: how far apart the two colours sit in hue and in lightness. From that it follows whether a cap and a coat are the same family, a neutral pairing, or a high contrast. Nothing on this page claims that any combination suits you, flatters you, or looks good — that is not something a grid can know.

Every cell states the objective relationship between the cap colour and the coat colour. Hover or focus a cell to turn it over. Select a cap colour by its row button.
How the three markers are defined
- Same family
- Hue distance under 30°, or both colours unsaturated with a lightness gap under 35%.
- Neutral pairing
- Hue distance between 30° and 75°, or one unsaturated colour within 25% lightness of the other.
- High contrast
- Hue distance above 75°, or a lightness gap wide enough to read as a deliberate break.
How the smallest set is found
1. Every pair is measured
Each cap colour and each coat colour is converted to hue, saturation and lightness. The distance between them in hue and in lightness decides which of the three markers the cell gets.
2. Covering pairs are counted
Same family and neutral pairing count as covered. High contrast does not — it is a deliberate break rather than a match, so it is never counted towards coverage.
3. The shortest list wins
The grid repeatedly picks the cap colour that covers the most of your still-uncovered coats, until nothing is left to cover. That produces the shortest list of caps, not the most expensive one.
Sometimes the answer is two caps rather than three. When that happens the grid says so. The set price still needs three of one style, so the honest version is: two will cover your coats, a third gives you a rotation and brings the price per cap down.
